100th New Light Rail Vehicle Enters Service in San Francisco

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has added the 100th new four-series light rail vehicle (LRV4) to its fleet as part of its ongoing LRV Fleet Replacement Program. These cars are among 219 light rail vehicles being produced for SFMTA at Siemens Mobility’s facility in Sacramento. Under the LRV Fleet Replacement Program, SFMTA is steadily expanding its fleet, with approximately three new LRV4 train cars arriving each month. It is expected that Siemens will deliver all 219 cars by 2025. This will allow SFMTA to retire its ageing Breda light rail vehicles, which have been in use in San Francisco since 1955. The LRV4 trains are more dependable than the outdated Bredas and will require less maintenance. This makes them more reliable and less expensive to operate.
