Today, 18 November 2021, the British government has published its much delayed Integrated Rail Plan for the North and Midlands.

In it, the government has confirmed the cancellation of the eastern leg of HS2 (Phase 2b East), which would connect Birmingham with Leeds and free up capacity on the Midland Main Line and the East Coast Main Line by removing high-speed services from these routes and allowing them to carry a much higher frequency of stopping services.
