All UK drivers could pay new tax in bid to cut emissions

The government is currently debating introducing a new tyre tax that would see drivers paying more for their cars. This comes as the transport department is looking to crack down on carbon emissions and is looking to see how tyres contribute to any harmful emissions. The DfT has reportedly hired a consultancy firm to assess and control these emissions as tyre wear looks to become the next challenge for the government and car manufacturers to deal with in coming years. Emissions from tyre wear may also increase in the future as the world begins to use more electric vehicles. A government spokesperson told the Telegraph that ‘We want to understand the impacts of non-exhaust emissions, such as tyres, on the environment which is why we are conducting research on the matter’.
